A Word from the Author

From Beirut to Baltimore to Oklahoma — a life in medicine and letters.

Ghazi Rayan grew up in Beirut, trained at some of the most storied institutions in American medicine, and built a career caring for patients while teaching hundreds of surgeons. He founded the first hand surgery fellowship in Oklahoma and served as president of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.

In his writing, he turns that same devotion toward history — profiling the immigrants who founded, healed, invented, and enriched a nation, and reflecting on friendship and perseverance as the quiet engines of a good life.
